Reading List

I thought it might be useful to create a reading list for various areas of systematic and pastoral theology. My hope is that this list will have something of an organic life, being edited from time to time as I come across various texts (and suggestions by others) that warrant inclusion. While I hope that the list betrays theological discernment and acumen, I’m not interested in developing a list that pleases any one theological camp in particular … though my biases will be obvious enough. It is hoped that the list will reflect the best and most important texts of a tradition unashamedly ecumenical, catholic and apostolic. The kind of thing I have in mind is a reading list and resource for English-speaking undergraduate theology students. Of course, in good blogging style, I also welcome suggestions … and please let me know if any of the links no longer work.

A few things to note:

Many books elude easy categorisation. In such cases I have placed it where I think if belongs best and sometimes in multiple places. If you think it ought to be somewhere else, suggest somewhere.

I haven’t read everything. That’s why I’m asking for your help.

In due course, I may add further categories. But for now, I have decided on the following 22:

1. Theological Method and Prolegomena

2. Systematics/Dogmatics

3. Biblical Theology

4. Theology Proper

5. Patriology

6. Christology

7. Pneumatology

8. Revelation

9. Creation

10. Soteriology

16. Worship

17. Pastoral Ministry

18. Preaching

you really ought to add Richard Hays’ ‘Moral Vision of the New Testament’ to your ‘ethics’ reading list.

    Thanks Alison,

A great suggestion. It’s now on the list.

In terms of the your ecclesiology list. I think you must include Nicholas M. Healy’s Church, World and the Christian Life (CUP, 2000) and Gunton & Hardy’s, On Being the Church (T & T Clark, 1989)

  4. 12 December, 2007 at 1:13 pm | #4

Two great suggestions Andy. Thanks for that. I’m surprised that I left the Gunton/Hardy book off the list. It’s a great book.

It is an admirable list and could take years to slowly work through. My suggestion, these are all great books, is to start with the early philosophers/ theologians like the Pre-Socratic philosophers/ Plato/ Aristotle/ and Irenaeus/ Athanasius/ Justin Martyr and work slowly towards today reading the primary sources +the occasional interpretive help. One thing that struck me regarding your list is how “modern” the authors are. I continue to remain surprised at how much philosophy has influenced theology from the beginning. Perhaps getting a good philosophical background regarding the issues would be more beneficial. Rather than reading all of these books, it may be helpful to start off with a different list that is more historically oriented and works towards today’s issues. Just a thought–blessings on your reading.

    John,

Thanks for your thoughts. I think you’re saying something extremely important and I’d like to give to some time to chasing these things up. Certainly when I’ve taught theology in the past, the importance of monumental thinkers such Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, and the Fathers has not been left unattended, even if that not necessarily be where one needs to ’start with’. Can you recommend any key philosophical texts (or readers) that you have found helpful and/or you believe are a ‘must’?

Other than reading the primary texts of the philosophers/ theologians, like Plato’s works, my recommendation would be to get Frederick Copleston’s volumes on “A History of Philosophy.” I would also slowly read through the Church Fathers, CCEL has them all for download for free. By the way I’m stuck for the moment working carefully through Hume’s works (Treatise and Essay, and the Dialogues) so its not just a matter of me prescribing and not doing (do as I say and not do as I do…). Blessings on your reading and study in 2008. By the way I’ve enjoyed your blog. Keep posting!

    Thanks for this list!

  9. 16 March, 2008 at 9:57 pm | #9

Have you read Michael Quicke’s 360 degree Preaching: Hearing, Speaking, and Living the Word (Baker Academic 2003)?

Also consider Arthur Glasser’s Announcing the Kingdom: The Story of God’s Mission in the Bible (Baker Academic, 2003).

How about Gordon Fee’s latest Pauline Christology (Hendrickson, 2007)?

In Pastoral Theology it is kind of hard to ignore Andrew Purves’ Pastoral Theology in the Classical Tradition (Westminster John Knox Press, 2001) or Reconstructing Pastoral Theology: A Christological Foundation (Westminster John Knox Press, 2004).

One other on one pastoral ministry: Charles Bridges The Christian Ministry (Banner of Truth, 1958).

    Hope this helps.

Many thanks Brian for what looks like a good list of references. While I’ve had a brief look at Fee’s book, I haven’t read the others you mention. I’ll be sure to check them out.

    Thanks again,

    Jason

    Jason,

I know you are the UK, which is cool!, just wondering have you read any books on preaching in various traditions like African American preaching? If not, are there any books published in the UK that are similar?

  12. 11 April, 2008 at 7:58 am | #12

    Jason.

It’s been a long time since I read a book on preaching other than Forsyth’s of course (the last was Barth’s Homiletics). I am unaware of any books published in the UK on African American preaching.

I’m happy for your recommend any helpful books if you come across them though.

    Thanks, Jason.

I really appreciate your comprehensive reading list. I have to make a copy of the list, or just bookmark this site b/c I know you update this list, right?

  14. 12 April, 2008 at 8:49 am | #14

    Jason,

I’m so pleased that you have found this a helpful list. I had hoped it might serve as a useful resource and am encouraged that it has had over 600 hits since I first compiled it. I semi-regularly add to the list books that I come across that I think qualify as a good undergraduate text. I’m also very happy to receive recommendations.

  15. 15 April, 2008 at 11:49 pm | #15

‘Very comprehensive’ – would be an understatement, Jason. However, you could, as ever, include another. My suggestion would be under the Creation heading: “Creation and the Liberating Glory”, by Geoffrey C. Bingham. Seminal. Cheers!

    Great suggestion Trevor. Thanks.

Pastoral Theology needs three books, St. Gregory’s Pastoral Rule, George Herbert’s Country Parson, and Charles Spurgeon’s Lectures to Students.

In theology proper you may do well to add, “Theology of the Pain of God” by Kazoh Kitamori” and “The Trinity in Asian Perspective” by Jung Young Lee.

Then in systematics I noticed that perhaps “De Principiis” by Origen could be a useful addition. You could also put Charles Finney, he gets ignored a lot for good reasons, but his discussion of human agency is useful.

Soteriology could use “Violence, Hospitality, and the Cross” by Boersma. It could probably make use of “Community Call Atonement” by McKnight because of its usefulness to lay people.

Baxter wrote a book called the Christian Directory that could easily fit under Ethics, Ecclesiology, and Pastoral theology simply because it deals with cases of conscience on a massive level.

I wonder if Christology couldn’t use “The Human Being” by Walter Wink, and then Wright’s two volumes in his Christian origins series.

“Theologies of the Old Testament” by Gerstenberger might be useful for biblical theology of OT intro.

I know that some of these are in categories besides the ones I recommend already, but I figure they could fit into more than one…I hope.

  18. 17 May, 2008 at 5:39 pm | #18

Geoff. Many thanks for these excellent recommendations, some of which were already included, and some of which I’ve added as a result of your flagging.

    Thanks again.

your reading list is exceptionaly good for prospecting and theologians alike. it has covered all areas of theology making it very early for any serious theologian to access or make research. keep it up. You have help many.

    Prince,

I’m so pleased you found the list, and are finding it of some help. I’d be keen to hear from you if there are recommendations you found particularly helpful (or otherwise) and of any others you may have.

    Cheers.

Hi Jason! What a great website thank you. I pretty much became a christian under Geoffrey Bingham’s ministry in 1992. I’m now in 1st year at Moore College. In between I’ve become a professional jazz musician. I am just about to release my first album as leader (I’ve played on over 20 albums by others). It is a jazz record. Would you like a copy? Would you be able to review it for me here?
    In Christ’s love

    Hi Jason,

Got a new book recommendation to add to your reading list. It’s from Robert Smith, Jr., a divinity professor from Beeson Divinity School in Birmingham, AL, USA. It’s called Doctrine That Dances: Bringing Doctrinal Preaching and Teaching to Life.

I noticed you’ve got Gordon D. Fee’s “God’s Empowering Presence” under your pneumatology section, and I am glad. I love that book dearly. Fee’s “Pauline Christology” is a similar approach to Paul’s Christiology, and is worth a mention under the Christology Section. There are some gems in this list, for sure; Bonhoeffer’s “Ethics”, Geerhardus Vos and Michael S. Horton. This is a great resource man! Thank you!

  24. 10 April, 2009 at 9:30 pm | #24

    Jason,

I came across Candler homiletics professor Thomas G. Long’s book, The Witness of Preaching on Google Books. Check it out. He’s pretty good.

E.Y. Mullin’s “The Christian Religion in Its Doctrinal Expression” is an excellent piece of Baptist theology and should probably go in the Dogmatics section. In 1917 Mullins anticipated a great deal of 20th century theology.
